About My Blog

July 1, 2018 I set out on the longest bicycle trip of my life. My current plans will take me through more than fifty countries starting in Cambodia. I will travel through Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos, Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia for the first few months of the trip. The total trip will take years and I will see how long my endurance, health and money holds out.

If you want to follow along with me on my journey or to see more of my photography please take a look at my website here, my stock photography here, and my Flickr page here. You can also follow me on Twitter  – @ScottSharick and Instagram – @scottsharick and on YouTube – Scott Sharick.

According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary the definition of adventure is:

1 a : an undertaking usually involving danger and unknown risks.

b : the encountering of risks

2 : an exciting or remarkable experience

3 : an enterprise involving financial risk

An adventure to one may be mundane to another. What I thought was adventurous yesterday may be run of the mill today. Like everything in life it is our unique perspective that allows us to place labels on our experiences which may be anything from boring to extreme.

When I was a young boy I wanted to buy a rubber Gumby toy at Hatch’s, the corner store down the street. The store was only about ten houses away but for me it involved unknown risks. I was to make the trip alone. In the dark. By definition this was an adventure. It was enough of a remarkable experience that almost fifty years later I still remember how scared I was.

Throughout my life I have always sought out the unknown. Although they were smaller chunks in the beginning as I grew they also grew. Not in the same fashion as Columbus or Sir Edmund Hillary but in my own way, a more subtle way. I always was, and still am intrigued by what might be around the next corner or over that hill in the distance. I find enormous satisfaction in going to new places, seeing new things and meeting new people. Even driving on a new road can be exciting to me and given the choice I will go out of my way to travel a new road over an old one.

Over the years photography has become a large part of my life. At times I feel my camera is an extension of me, something that pulls me in directions I wouldn’t otherwise have gone and it gets me excited about using it to venture out and find new experiences. It has been said that a picture is a look into the soul of a photographer and I couldn’t agree more.

This blog is about me, a regular guy, and my adventures. I’ve lived my life just like everyone else but some of my options and choices may be different than yours or those of the guy down the street. I will write about places I’ve been, the things I have done and the people I meet along the way. Nothing here will make you sit on the edge of your seat or give you sweaty palms (well maybe one or two things) but hopefully something I write about will interest you enough and maybe even motivate you to explore somewhere new or revisit a place from your past and look at it in a different way.

Some of the adventures I post will be current and some of them will be from my past. I’ll be sure to post some images to give you a look at the world from my perspective. Feel free to comment on anything, ask questions or to give me some advice or ideas. I’m not done learning yet and together we can explore this world.
